Norway said on Monday it would release an additional 60 million kroner in aid to Pakistan, bringing its total aid to the country since last month's earthquake to 240 million kroner (30.8 million euros, 36.4 million dollars).

"The situation is dramatic for large parts of the population who have been affected by the earthquake in Pakistan," Norwegian development aid minister Erik Solheim said in a statement.

"The winter cold is coming and many people, especially children, are at risk of dying. It is urgent that we get more aid in faster," he added.

The additional aid announced by Norway will be given to the United Nations, which on Monday said that it needed at least 42.4 million dollars immediately to continue its humanitarian aid operations in the region through the month of November.
